HIGHLAND PARK, LOS ANGELES (KABC) — Activists in Highland Park are setting up emergency sirens in an effort to warn people of immigration enforcement activity, the Los Angeles Times reported Thursday.
Fliers distributed throughout the neighborhood say: “When alarm goes off ICE is in the community. Get off the streets, take shelter and lock down.”
In response, a spokesperson for the Department of Homeland Security issued a statement to The Times: “This is quite literally insane. The residents of Highland Park want to buy an air raid siren, the same device that was used in London when German planes flew over – to alert the community about ICE. Seems like a public nuisance.”
Immigration enforcement activity has occurred in Highland Park this year, including in January when community members said immigration agents arrested a food vendor.
“There was an empty taco stand, his van and many people from the neighborhood were helping put all the stuff away into the van so it could be taken and brought back to his family,” Darren Golt, who witnessed the aftermath of the arrest, said at the
