The chances of a white Christmas this year are slim for many Americans \u2013\u00a0but weather could play a more serious part in the festive season for millions.<\/p>\n

Stormy weather\u00a0is expected to\u00a0impact travel across the U.S.\u00a0as\u00a0more than 120 million Americans\u00a0heading home for the holidays\u00a0take to the roads and skies.<\/p>\n

While\u00a0an atmospheric river storm in California\u00a0resulted in deadly flash flooding, forecasters warned another was on its way.<\/p>\n

Meteorologists also said an early-week clipper system is projected to bring snow and chilly temperatures from the Midwest to the Northeast.<\/p>\n

“A somewhat larger clipper storm will affect parts of the Upper Midwest and Northeast from Monday to Tuesday,”\u00a0AccuWeather Senior Meteorologist Adam Douty explained.<\/p>\n

Other parts of the country may experience dry but extremely warm weather this week, according to AccuWeather, with the potential to be one of the warmest Christmases on record in the south-central states.<\/p>\n

“Close to two dozen states, from parts of the Rockies to portions of the Appalachians, northward through much of the Plains and part of the Midwest, are forecast to experience temperatures that are 15 to 30 degrees above the historical average by Christmas Day,”\u00a0AccuWeather Meteorologist Alyssa Glenny said.<\/p>\n

\n

The West<\/h2>\n<\/div>\n

Travel is projected to be most disrupted in California and the West.<\/p>\n

California, which has already seen\u00a0nearly a foot of rain in some areas\u00a0and hazardous flooding that\u00a0resulted in the death of one unidentified person in Redding, is bracing for a second atmospheric river storm this week and\u00a0more impacts to airports.<\/p>\n

Flood warnings\u00a0remained in effect in northern California\u2019s Shasta County on Monday, as the National Weather Service cautioned that rivers, creeks, streams and other low-lying locations could flood.<\/p>\n

\u201cPlease stay safe tonight and call in to report any emergencies or issues of concern so staff is aware,\u201d Redding\u2019s Mayor Mike Littau urged Sunday night on Facebook.<\/p>\n

There\u2019s \u201cstill more to come for the Redding area,\u201d Katrina Hand, at the weather service’s Sacramento branch,\u00a0said.<\/p>\n

Sacramento and the San Francisco Bay Area are set to see\u00a0two or four more inches of rain, according to\u00a0AccuWeather.<\/p>\n

\u201cNumerous flash flooding events are possible. In addition, many streams may flood, potentially affecting larger rivers,\u201d\u00a0the National Weather Service said. \u201cThe flooding may include debris flows in or near recently burned areas.\u201d<\/p>\n

Strong winds are another threat with this storm, said AccuWeather, including gusts up to 70 miles per hour in northern California.<\/p>\n

While the first atmospheric river was largely focused on the northern and central regions of the Golden State, the second storm is anticipated to develop over central and southern California from Tuesday and past Christmas Day.<\/p>\n

A flood watch\u00a0is in place for Los Angeles starting Tuesday afternoon and lasting through Friday afternoon, with\u00a0KABC\u00a0reporting some communities could see up to 10 inches of rain.<\/p>\n

With the storm, however,\u00a0snow could finally fall around Lake Tahoe\u00a0after\u00a0one of the slowest starts to the season in decades.<\/p>\n

Up the West Coast, snow was continuing to dump across\u00a0Portland\u00a0and up through the\u00a0Seattle\u00a0area.<\/p>\n

\u201cModels suggest up to 12 additional inches of snow is on the way above 4,000 to 5,000 feet by the time we get to Christmas Eve (Wednesday),\u201d Portland\u2019s\u00a0KOIN\u00a0said.<\/p>\n

Meanwhile,\u00a0critical fire weather conditions\u00a0continued for a second week in windy Colorado, with\u00a0above-normal temperatures slated to continue there\u00a0through Christmas.<\/p>\n

\n

The Central and Southern states<\/h2>\n<\/div>\n

In the central U.S. and southern U.S., the weather is forecast to be largely dry and warm this week.<\/p>\n

That\u2019s because of a large \u201cbubble\u201d of warm air building over the region, according to AccuWeather. The\u00a0FOX Forecast Center said\u00a0the air would challenge more than 100 record high temperatures in the regions.<\/p>\n

Highs in much of Texas are in the 70s this week, with temperatures in\u00a0Indiana,\u00a0Nebraska\u00a0and\u00a0Arkansas\u00a0in the 60s.<\/p>\n

\u201cSome record highs may be tied or broken at both official climate sites in Dallas-Fort Worth and Waco,\u201d forecasters in Fort Worth, Texas, said in a social media\u00a0post.<\/p>\n

Christmas may break some records in the Lone Star State, Missouri, Oklahoma, Kansas and New Mexico, AccuWeather said.<\/p>\n

Cool temperatures are forecast to return by next week in Oklahoma,\u00a0Norman forecasters noted.<\/p>\n

Along the Gulf Coast, Louisiana and Florida were also expected to see warm temperatures. Louisiana saw\u00a0dense fog\u00a0and Florida experienced\u00a0winds over 30 miles per hour\u00a0on Monday.<\/p>\n

\n

The Great Lakes to the East<\/h2>\n<\/div>\n

A clipper system \u2013 a fast, low-pressure storm that forms in Canada \u2013 is\u00a0bringing snow from the Great Lakes\u00a0to New England and the Northeast early in the week before temperatures warm.<\/p>\n

Detroit was set to see\u00a0around half an inch\u00a0before light rain starts on Monday afternoon.<\/p>\n

Snow and a wintry mix is also set to impact travel in the northern mid-Atlantic and into New England.<\/p>\n

In Boston,\u00a0accumulating snowfall is likely on Tuesday, forecasters said, with up to three inches along and west of the I-95.<\/p>\n

To the south, light snow was\u00a0expected Monday night in New York City.<\/p>\n

\u201cSnow likely changes to rain along the coast Tuesday morning, and possibly by early afternoon for most inland areas,\u201d the National Weather Service in the Big Apple said.<\/p>\n

Tracker\u00a0FlightAware\u00a0showed there was some flight trouble at the city\u2019s John F. Kennedy International Airport, as well as in Chicago and Atlanta.<\/p>\n

Less than an inch of snow\u00a0was projected to fall in Philadelphia, with precipitation shifting north.<\/p>\n
